Speaking to the press, Serie A boss Ezio Simonelli stated, "We have learned the resignations of Maldini and Leonardo on television, and we have taken note of them. Surprised? I would say no, it was predictable."
Simonelli added, "Maldini had chosen Pirlo, but he will not be coach. I am disappointed because I think Maldini was an excellent choice, a precious person, and I would have appreciated, for the good of all football, that his involvement continued."
Meanwhile, Giancarlo Abete expressed similar disappointment, noting that the federation must now start completely from scratch to build a serious new project for the national team.
