FIFA backs controversial red card decision during Argentina World Cup match

World football governance faced a rare public disagreement this Tuesday as FIFA openly contradicted the International Football Association Board regarding a crucial VAR intervention at the World Cup.

The controversy centers on the July 11 match between Argentina and Switzerland, where referee Joao Pinheiro utilized video technology to overturn an incorrect booking initially given to Leandro Paredes and instead brandished a second yellow card to Switzerland forward Breel Embolo.

Earlier in the day, the IFAB issued a circular arguing that the red card was procedurally incorrect under current rules. According to their strict technical stance, VAR can correct a case of mistaken identity regarding who committed a foul, but cannot alter the fundamental nature of the whistled infraction from a tackle to a simulation.

However, FIFA swiftly intervened to defend the refereeing crew and the application of video technology on social media. The world governing body insisted that the decision successfully upheld the true spirit of the game and restored sporting justice.

"Simulation should not result in a disciplinary sanction against an opponent that could then lead to further consequences, such as a red card for a second yellow card or a match suspension for accumulation of bookings," FIFA stated in its official communication.

Furthermore, FIFA maintained that the ruling was applied consistently throughout the tournament, referencing a similar incident involving Miguel Almiron during a match between Paraguay and the United States.

Addressing the apparent conflict, FIFA noted that it has remained in constant communication with the IFAB throughout the entire process. According to officials, the panel acknowledged that the practical interpretation was valid, well-received, and will serve as a foundational point for upcoming discussions regarding future revisions to the VAR protocol.
